Bernihat of Meghalaya tops the most polluted cities in the world.
In many cities of the country, pollution is so bad that it has become difficult to breathe. According to the World Air Quality Report 2024 of Switzerland’s Air Quality Technology Company ‘IQ’, 13 of the 20 most polluted cities in the world are from India. In this list Meghalaya’s Bernihat (Meghalaya byrnihat pollution) at the top. This news has increased concern.

The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) declared Bernihat in Meghalaya as the most polluted urban center in the country for the first time in 2023, which was the air quality index 302, which falls in a very poor category. It is surprising that a city in Meghalaya, known for greenery, lake and its beauty, is included in the list of top polluted cities of the world.

Why Bernihat so much polluted?
The reason for so much pollution in Bernihat on the Assam and Meghalaya border is emission from local factories. It includes alcohol manufacturing, iron and steel plants. Due to emissions emanating from these factories, the level of pollution in Bernihat remains high.

Meghalaya CM expressed concern
Meghalaya Chief Minister Konrad K Sangma said that after knowing that the city of Bernihat is on top of the list of the most polluted cities in the world. He said that his government is trying his best to control the situation in the industrial area of Bernihat, situated near the Assam border.
