The Supreme Court has given its verdict on water pollution in Vellore, Tamil Nadu, known as India’s leather center. The Supreme Court said that leaving untreated or partially treated waste caused irreversible damage and environmental erosion has endangered people’s health. Thus the employees of the leather industry have violated environmental laws.
State government should give compensation to the affected people
The Supreme Court said that the people affected due to this should give compensation to the state government. Under the law, this compensation should be collected from those who spread pollution. At the same time, the Supreme Court also asked to constitute a committee headed by a retired judge of the High Court for the maintenance of clean environment. The Supreme Court warned that orders should be followed in four weeks or else Tamil Nadu will not be sent to Tihar.
