A breast milk bank at the District Women’s Hospital in Akola, Maharashtra has helped 3,816 newborns to provide free milking since its inception in August 2021. A hospital official gave this information. He said that every year, more than 12,000 women give birth to children in district women hospitals of Akola and neighboring Washim and Buldhana districts. Superintendent of the hospital, Dr. Jayant Patil told ‘PTI-language’ on Wednesday that many women are unable to breastfeed their newborns due to weakness, physical problems and other medical reasons. To deal with this problem, ‘Yashoda Mother Milk Bank’ was established in the hospital here in August 2021.
Since the establishment of the milk bank, 3,621 mothers who have been breastfeeding have collectively donated 714 liters of milk in the center. Patil said that out of this, 708 liters of milk received from breastfeeding mothers has been made available to 3,816 newborns. The hospital is celebrating the Women’s Week since March 8. March 8 is celebrated as International Women’s Day.

The official said that in 2020, a child was born in Melghat, a tribal area of neighboring Amravati district, but the mother could not breastfeed the child due to medical reasons. He told that due to lack of nutrients, the child fell ill. Then a tribal woman named Sarla Tote, who lives in the neighborhood, breastfeed the child. Patil said that Tote was later made the brand ambassador of ‘Yashoda Milk Bank’ and was also honored for his move.
Kavita Lovele, in -charge of the hospital, said that every day 15 to 20 women come and donate breast milk in the bank, where it is medically processed and stored at temperatures below minus 20 ° C. He said that milk bank plays an important role in fighting malnutrition.
