New Delhi:
The anti -Hindi spirit is once again provoking in Tamil Nadu. Actually the Tamil Nadu government has not implemented the National Education Policy (NEP) in the state. He says that this policy is an attempt to impose Hindi. This matter also arose in Parliament on Monday. Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan alleged that the DMK government of Tamil Nadu is playing with the future of the students there. His statement was opposed by DMK MPs. He has proposed a breach of privilege in the Lok Sabha against Pradhan. Describing Dharmendra Pradhan as arrogant, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin said that he needs to teach discipline.
Anti -Hindi movement in Tamil Nadu
Politics has been going on for a long time in Tamil Nadu regarding NEP. Along with delimitation in the state, the issue of opposition to Hindi is also hot. Tamil Nadu says that through NEP, the central government is trying to impose Hindi and Sanskrit on it. Opposition to Hindi is not new to Tamil Nadu. Opposition to Hindi in Tamil Nadu has been going on before independence. Tamil people take their linguistic identity more seriously than the people of other states. The opposition started in Tamil Nadu in 1937. At that time there was a movement against making Hindi the national language. It is known as an anti -Hindi language movement. Earlier in 1928, Motilal Nehru proposed to make Hindi the language of government work in India. His proposal was also strongly opposed by Tamil leaders.

At that time, it was known as Madras province of Tamil Nadu. In that Madras Presidency, there was a Congress government under the leadership of Rajagopalachari. He had decided to make Hindi studies mandatory in schools. This decision of the Congress government was opposed by EV Ramsamy, known as Periyar. At that time, the Justice Party, which was in the opposition, also opposed this decision of the government. This Justice Party later became famous as DMK, which is running the government in Tamil Nadu today.
Second round of anti -Hindi movement in Tamil Nadu
This violent movement lasted for about three years. In this movement, two youths named Thalamuthu and Natarajan were killed and hundreds of people were injured. About 12 hundred people were arrested for participating in the anti -Hindi movement. Tilt in front of this movement, Rajagopalachari’s Congress government resigned in February 1940. Lord Arskin, the Governor of Madras Presidency, withdrew the order to make Hindi compulsory.

After this, in 1963, there was a proposal to make Hindi an official language under the Constitution. It was to be implemented from 26 January 1965. Earlier, opposition started in Tamil Nadu. In this anti -Hindi movement, about 70 people lost their lives in the incidents of police action and self -immolation. During this time railway stations were burnt. Signboards written in Hindi were broken.
Why should the central government go back by making Hindi an official language
CN Annadurai wanted to see a black flag on the roof of all the houses on 26 January. But in view of Republic Day, the praise of hoisting the black flag on the houses was made on 25 January. There was a violent protest in Madurai that day. Eight people were burnt alive outside the Congress office. January 25 is celebrated as ‘Sacrifice Day’ in Tamil Nadu. In view of this, the central government had to take back its steps. The government amended the language policy in 1967. In this, English was also maintained as an official language.
Tamil Nadu started working on its two-language formula from 1968. In this, emphasis was given to teach in Tamil as well as English. Tamil Nadu is educated in Tamil as well as English. The effect of this is that the software revolution in India became more successful in the south. The importance of English has now been recognized by other states. In typical Hindi speaking states like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, now English medium schools are seen everywhere.
NEP and Tri -Language Formula

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin are face to face on National Education Policy.
Under the National Education Policy, there is a policy of reading in three languages. In this, the government proposed that in Hindi speaking states up to secondary level, students should learn one of the southern languages and Hindi with regional language and English in non-Hindi speaking states. The same formula is also the same in the Rajiv Gandhi government in 1986 National Education Policy Policy and Narendra Modi government in 2020 National Education Policy. Contrary to the 1986 NEP, there is no mention of Hindi in the 2020 NEP. It has been said that the three languages learned by children will be the choice of students, regions and of course, provided that at least two of the three languages are the languages of Indian origin, although the Tamil Nadu government is trying to impose Hindi. Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has said that if Tamil Nadu does not implement the new education policy, then his government will not give him financial assistance under the overall education campaign. Tamil Nadu has described it as blackmailing.
